    Right first off.
Please read this sitewide announcement for details on where the best place to post is. This thread is for the AH take on the situation. Might cheer some people up.
Rules: I know ye hate them but they are necessary.
    1. No negative generalisation about public or private service. This is very important to note as both public and private service are regular posters on boards and we don't want any insults.
And that's about it other than the usual charter rules.
Issues raised so far (Please feel free to add to / debate these as all is speculation until tomorrow):
Taoiseach Brian Cowen was tonight warned of alleged attempts to overthrow him by a senior Cabinet minister as the countdown begins to the most feared Budget in living memory.

In a sensational claim, adding to the woes of the embattled premier as he faces into an unprecedented €4bn cost-cutting plan, it was claimed that Finance Minister Brian Lenihan was hatching a planned coup.
    Read more: http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/cowen-warned-of-lenihan-coup-plot-437449.html#ixzz0Z8Z7d8Tk

It also looks like a public service pay cut may come in across the board, though the extent is being debated. The taoiseach is possibly taking a 57 grand paycut according to the Sindo, the ministers somewhere in the region of 33 grand. Social welfare to be hit by 4%. Indications that childrens allowance is to be cut by 10%. Cost of booze might go down! (Silver lining?) (All this may become irrelevant once announcements come in)
Well, can Lenihan pull some magic our of his hat or are we all doomed? Please post relevant links wherever possible. Lets try and make this a news feed and not a troll fest. We're all potentially going to lose out here. Please report any posts you take issue with and let us deal with them. Please keep your discussion to this thread as all other budget discussion threads will be merged with this one or locked.

I actually cant wait for the budget tomorrow....Its gonna be hilarious watching everyone go nuts. I'm sure I'll get hit in the wallet but I'm willing to chip in.

In an ideal world the government would put appropriate resources into countering benefit fraud and all the other avenues of abhorrent wastage but we all know that is not going to happen any time soon.

This has been a hot issue since that TV show last night hasn't it. Good timing out of RTE to stimulate discussion on the matter. Now more than ever with our coffers bleeding money benefit fraud must be stamped down on.

I think it will be hilarious too. Can't wait for the rabble!

I'll be listening with interest... from the other side of the world, just in case. Seriously, this budget is critical and we're all going to have to help. Pity about the antisocial timing though.

Can you imagine what an Irish coup would be like? Lenihan would probably mass his army of bankers and sic 'em on poor Biffo.

It's a good tactic though, give a horrible budget, but reduce the price of alcohol, so at least the people can afford to drink away their sorrows.

think its going to be very interesting, but i'm more concerned about the public service union chiefs bringing the country to a standstill when they strike over the proposed cuts

Its like visiting an expensive whore house...you know your gunna get screwed somewhere along the line.

They are going to tax us more, cut the public service pay, the dole and possibly cut some more stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,257 ✭✭✭SoupyNorman

No need for a discussion, just link the 'Deaths' database with the 'Pension' database with the 'People who dont live in the country' database and we'd be onto a good start.

/whisper :Hey Government, It is possible to link databases kk.

On a side note, I like Lenihen. I think he speaks extremely well and is the least evasive of questions...I'm not a FF supporter by any means but credit where credit is due he took up a poison chalice in the Minister for Finance position and so far he is stomaching the poison.

I suppose there's no chance of a cut to harney's eating expenses?

    we're screwed :(

TBH I am also warming to Lenihan. Could be Stockholm syndrome. Might not last long.

I will promise to vote FF for the rest of my life if, somewhere in the speech, it is declared that 'the price of a 6-pack of Tuborg will be reduced from €7.99 to €7'.

I swear, if that fupper introduces a kebab tax, I'll start a revolution.

True, but at least you have the choice on whether you visit or not.

Tomorrow will be interesting to say the least and not in a good way.

If you've already lived through one recession, you may of course trade in the vaseline for a similar sized tub of swarfega.

Former Progressive Democrat TD Noel Grealish is to meet the Taoiseach today in an effort by the Government to secure his support for the Budget.

Government Chief Whip Pat Carey has expressed confidence that independents including Tipperary North TD Michael Lowry will back the Budget tomorrow.

A meeting is due to take place with South Kerry Deputy Jackie Healy Rae on the issue later.

The three FF backbenchers who have resigned the whip - Jimmy Devins, Eamonn Scanlon and Jim McDaid are also reported to be ready to lend their support tomorrow.

Indication that the govt are pooping a brick and pulling every string possible to ensure the budget gets through.
Are they expecting a back bench revolt to catapult Lenihan in or a negative response from the greens or something?

    FYP Dr. B

There's not going to be a revolt, revolution or coup. Who in their reasonably right mind would take over the leadership at such an unbelievably stupid time? Getting the budget through is in everyone's interest. If the govt are dropping bricks it's because they know that they're screwed in the long term. Enda Kenny must be rubbing his bony hands together and cackling with malevolent glee.

Well, if Michael Lowry and Jackie Healy-Rae are on the case, that's all I need to hear.

That's like Marsellus Wallace telling Jules that the Wolfman is coming.

    Sweet jebus...
How had I not thought of that before now?

The budget coming out with all those unemployed keyboard warriors stuck hanging around boards instead of being able to work...

    BUGGER THAT..
I'll be back in a week. Hopefully the front page will be down to three, bitching about the budget threads by then :D
