The ethnicity question about travellers is interesting. Is 350 years really enough to establish a separate ethnicity? Evolution, at its quickest, usually takes millennia for species to establish significantly different traits. So in this case, it would appear that the distinct ethnicity claim is being made purely on the basis of different cultural practices. If that is the scientific definition of ethnicity, that's fair enough.

But I'm struggling to understand how being critical of cultural practices can be deemed to be racist. 350 years of living a different lifestyle does not create a different race.

I have to agree with you here. Shane has no idea of how many people do actually spend their whole lives (and it's a generational thing) on social welfare. These people have a huge sense of entitlement to everything the state provides for them, I know, I grew up with them.

Especially the fact that its unaffordable. In the coming decades, the welfare bill will be out of control in this country, if it isn't already.

The problem is housing is already completely unaffordable for the vast majority of people in Ireland. The only problem is if you don't get a mortgage and become an indentured servant of whatever bank gives you the loan, you are at the mercy of the rental market and landlords who don't give a damn about you.

Peter Casey has actually energised people in a way I thought was impossible in this dynastical political process we have here in Ireland. It's the 'son of' or 'daughter of' who is mainly the candidate for each party.

Doubt it, he's not the sharpest of tools, this will probably all blow over in the coming weeks, and normal service will resume, if the way we were treated during the crash didn't energize us, I can't see much that will

Is he not just long on the 'problems' anyone with an interest in politics or social issues are well aware of and short of any solutions?

Unfortunately this is 100% right.

We often heard about all the lessons we learned from the crash, about how we are all getting sensible with money....but just look at the markets and housing sales again....its nearly worse than it was 10 years ago.

If I were a td I’d be more concerned about the hard pressed workers who are struggling to make ends meet rather than the long term welfare who don’t have to stress about travel costs, childcare, rent or mortgage costs, medical bills. But it seems (especially after that last sham of a budget), that the politicians don’t give two hoots about them.

There’s a few here questioning why these workers haven’t spoke up before. Well they appear to be now and the more the leader of our country and the media try to tell us that we’re some sort of bigots for having had enough, the more of a divide they will make between us.

Shouldn't Casey's message be 'if you keep voting for this, suck it up'.
Identifying the problems (we are all aware of) to get an office where he will be prisoner to those who ignore the problems is just stupid.

Well here's another belter for you.

There is a creche local to me that is doing really well over the last few years, its expanding big time and taking over more and more rental units in the town.

It opens early for breakfast clubs, and is open to teatime, so kids can be there all day. Operates over the summer too.

I have it on reliable information that of the over 80 families who have kids in it, 23 of them have both parents NOT working. And some of these kids are pre-school age. So although both parents are available all day to watch their own kids, they are still in a creche, paid for by you and me, so their parents have the whole day to themselves.

I kid you not.

I watched the Week In Politics last night. They gave the election 5 or 6 minutes and Casey got about a minute of that. And his traveller comments very little mention.
He might get plenty of chat on rant forums etc. But where it matters he is just like the rest of them.
Will be interesting to see how much he will rise (and he will) in the polls and even more to see how many are arsed to get off said arse to vote for him.
