Is O'Loughlin in as a centre? Surprised he's there ahead of Byrne otherwise.

    Plays centre and wing.

Yup, thought that he might get the nod when Olding was injured alright. Has had a great season. Big reward.

TOD is a bit of a surprise. No Sean Cronin is a shocker actually.

    Rory Scannell (Dolphin/Munster)*
    Jacob Stockdale (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)*
Simon Zebo (Cork Constitution/Munster) 33 caps

Can't argue against that really. Odd that Ryan is there without a pro start, Heffernan is a surprise given that he's mainly used from the bench, I'm disappointed for Buckley but I've spoken to coaches and understand why he hasn't been picked before or now ( doesn't mean I like it though) back 3 depth is the main need from this tour so I'm happy to see good performances given a chance in camp

An additional player is going to be added after the semi finals...

Worth noting that no captain has been named. Rob Kearney might well be that man.

Wow, did NOT see that coming.

Trimble the biggest omission. Sean Cronin too.

Sean Cronin is a big surprise for me... Surely he must have an injury or something? Noone really saw that coming.

The players that we need to move on from in the next year or so aren't there. I'm thrilled. It's a very progressive selection with enough established players there to maintain continuity.

Espn901/scrights will be looking for his apology :D

Yes, Tommy hadn't a great season , Cronin was listed recently as having a neck injury

Who is there to call up aside from TOD? SOB2, I guess?

TOD is the one guy that does stand out as a bit of a bag carrier, though. Tracy lucky enough too, for me.

Cronin isn't there but he has barely played this year. Would imagine he's still very much in plans.

Yeah, that is an interesting line.

It's not an Ulster player anyway, as they're not playing this weekend. You'd assume its someone like Heaslip or Kearney who are touch and go with fitness.

I guarantee people will still have a whinge about the omissions in the back three...

I blame Schmidt entirely. Like, we've only capped five different hookers in the last 12 months. What's he playing at? Only seven second rows and a measly eleven different players in the back three.

    hashtag joeout.

Yeah those caps against Canada were great alright. Nice jolly. Pity our back three is piss poor and none even considered for lions first 15's.

There's a difference between capping players one off and trusting them to come in.

Half of you guy's wanted to ditch Ringrose at 13.

For those guy's the egg must be hard to wipe off.

    Excellent selection. :)

Everyone who should be left at home has been left at home and plenty of young lads in the problematic areas of the squad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,176 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Well, with only three locks named, you can be assured that James Ryan is gonna be the first man since BOD to play for Ireland before his province.

    Strongest side:

Healy, Scannell, Ryan, Toner, Treadwell, Leavy, JVDF, Conan
Marmion, Jackson, Earls, Scannell, Ringrose, Conway, Zebo

Tracy, Kilcoyne, Bealham, Ruddock, JOD, McGrath, Carbery, TOH

I'd expect a weaker lineup in the US game first.

He's versatile and Byrne isn't, same reason Conway was picked ahead of Sweetnam whose first choice ahead of him at club level. I'm sure lads like Byrne who have big potential will get a look in during the autumn internationals when squad sizes don't need to be limited so makes sense to bring players who can fill in more than one position.

well i think Adam Byrne deserved a call. But hard to not get excited

Strange to think that Ringrose is one of the most experienced members of that squad

So scrights was right about Ryan anyway. Good shout there. Molony will be very disappointed with that though. And he's been going well lately.

Cronins neck injury must be worse than Leinster are letting on. If he really was touch and go for this weekend you'd imagine he'd be given the nod for the tour. This year has been pretty crappy for him in that regard.

Ruddock must be covering the second row if we're only bringing 3 in total. And Toner must be nowhere near Gatlands plans (which is fair enough given his form of late). Not sure I'd have brought TOD ahead of SOB2.0 but otherwise that's a good back row.

Half backs as expected really, as are the centres. Hopefully Scannell gets the starts ahead of Marshall. ROL must be covering centre and wing, especially as we know that Ringrose has an outside shot of getting called up to the Lions. Marshall is probably covering 12 and 13 too.

I expected Byrne to be excluded tbh, but am surprised Sweetnam has been too. Would have thought one of those two would have been in. We're really only looking at 2 new back three options on the tour, maybe 3 if you include TOH I suppose. Personally I'd have preferred an additional young lad in there. That said it's still a fairly small squad so it was always going to be impossible to fit everyone in.

Overall it's an exciting looking squad. I would worry though that it is fairly green. That shouldn't matter against USA, but might make Japan a tougher ask than people expect.

Basically so long and thanks for everything, Donnacha. I'm a bit surprised he hasn't made the squad tbh.

Who else is there? Ireland are down 4 players due to injury and Lions.
