The following is the most recent article on the case of Eanna O'Cochlain, who is appealing against his conviction in the Philippines on a charge of possession of a small amount of cannabis, for which he got a sentence of 12 years imprisonment.

The article was published in October 2017.

Mr O’Cochlain is currently in hiding as he awaits his court date as he fears he could be targeted by anti-drug vigilantes who have killed thousands in the country since its president, Rodrigo Duterte, effectively sanctioned the extra-judicial murder of drug dealers.

Obviously, the Irish government's hands are tied because it cannot interfere with the judicial system of an ostensibly democratic country.

But why is his family not as loud in campaigning for his release as Ibrahim Halawa's family was for his?

Maybe his family don't care for him as much as the other guys....

A white Irishmans plight is not exotic enough for the usual crusading windbags to get behind

Picked the wrong time to be caught with any amount of drugs in the Philippines with Duterte in charge. Suppose on the plus side, he hasn't been executed.

If he came out as a gender fluid activist you might see some media coverage and then in turn some political movement. But as long as there is no 'juice' to the story, he will continue to rot in a foreign country on spurious charges.

Is this guy in prison now so? Kindof bad value for money on the old luck of life roulette if that is the case.

Someone email the department of foreign affairs, though they may claim they're not paid enough to be dealing with this sort of thing.
