Also to add to the emissions, how much energy do people think it takes to firstly, search for the oil, build an oil rig, drill for the oil, extract it, load it on tankers , transport it to refineries, refine it and transport it to the petrol stations ? it's a vast amount of energy that's for sure.

A plug in Electric vehicle is only cutting out the last step there though. Fossil fuels are still needed to generate a lot of the electricity in the grid.

Although as has been pointed out, a significant amount of electricity in Ireland is renewable and that share is only likely to increase.

Just back from Texas, to fill my brother in laws 2litre Audi it was $25 when it hit red on fuel display. It will take a lot to convert the average American to convert to electricity plus the motor industry over there ain't going to like it. A friend of his was looking to buy a Tesla but with not many charging points he was a bit put off. Think there was 4 charging ports in Waco.

Thanks for the link. But average Americans where I was didn't have Merc's or Porsches. They mostly had pickup's or SUV's. Just wondering also let's say you had a Tesla in Texas, during summer months you have to have air con all the time, I'm assuming this will bring the mileage down on the Tesla range?

Yes, air con or heating will reduce the range but not massively so.

Just having a thought about the order system, say they take 115,000 orders.
That's some Kickstarter $115,000,000 interest free. For cars that won't be delivered till late 2017 at the earliest, and have yet to have their design finalised, fair play to them it really shows that with a 300+ range people will switch.

If I don't order realistically when would be the earliest I could get one ? 2020?

Can't find any pictures of the front boot (do you call it a boot when it's at the front?), but assume it will be easier to access. Not sure how big it will be though.

I think that all depends on what you order, people who order the top of the range Model 3 will get theirs first, order the base $35k model and you may have to wait

Hopefully that wakes up the Japs and Germans, what they offer is pathetic.

Remember it's not the final design , but change the shape of the glass and making it a 2 piece could add to the cost

A bit unfair both are moving in the right direction, and Toyota will wake up soon

Yeah that boot is atrocious and probably the ultimate reason I wouldn't buy it. And the cost of course but hopefully it's a decent price by the time it makes it over here. Maybe they'll have made it a proper hatch then too. Though my lease is up in 2018 the Leaf II will probably be here by then and I'll most likely change to that or maybe someone else will make a 300 odd KM range EV that has a decent boot !

I also note the GM have dropped the price of the Bolt to $20k in response to the 3 launch. Interesting times ahead..

    No way ? this isn't April 1st any more you know ? that's a 10 K drop ? they can't that's a major loss in revenue !

At least the tesla has supercharging the Bolt makes do with 50 Kw max. Though the way they said it appeared like that could change if they wanted.

April fool, according to the article the title is 20 dollars not 20,000 lol

    http://gmauthority.com/blog/2016/04/general-motors-responds-to-tesla-model-3-slashes-2017-chevrolet-bolt-ev-pricing-to-20/

There's no way GM could afford to sell the bolt for 20,000 !

The Model 3 is a really cool desirable car but the boot is ridiculous !

maybe the production version will be different.

    10 billion in 2 days!

I have to say a painted number-plate on the front of that would look the absolute business!

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,104 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Yeah, the front needs something. Maybe we're just used to a grille, but I don't think so.
It could be a locale to personalise your car.

Which would be illegal of course in Ireland

The cars with all the options will be built first, so someone ordering the most expensive version in Ireland might get their car before someone buying the $35K version in the US

Clever little musk , maximise the deposit ratio I wonder what % are fully loaded , if it's a lot then my argument holds true.
