As rugby has now grown to phenomenal levels in this country, a far greater proportion of players than before are coming through the youths system.
The provincial youth sides gives pretty much the same opportunities to players as a typical senior cup side does.
in munster the pan-munster section of the former 16/18s leagues now 17s/19s league have been expanded from 4 to 16 teams, creating more games of a higher standard for the stronger teams.
This weekend the munster u17&19 finals will be played in thomond park, which is a big step forward
on saturday waterpark play crosshaven in the 19s final at 4pm and waterpark play shannon-st marys in the 17s final at 2pm

This new pan munster system provides a far greater amount of players at higher playing levels coming out of the youths system, as playing at such a level of rugby would most likely keep a young lad focused solely on the sport.
    Any thoughts?

Its good to see that area improving and you'd hope the Munster academy will start bringing in more youths. Any players to look out for Ormond lad?

I heard that McGahan had an influence on changes made to the youths system. Do you know what they are if he did actually have a big influence?

the munster development officers and academy coaches are involved with the munster youths and the 4 regional youths squads that help make up the youths squad, for example noel o meara, former nenagh and young munster player and now cdo with munster rugby was headcoach of the east,
theres several players who were on munster youths this season who afaik are being looked at for sub-academy places,
mcgahan did play a role in changes but im not sure what his role was.

I heard that he organised meetings to try improve underage rugby and get a higher standard of player coming through. They looked at what the other provinces were doing.

Leinster had 4 youths in the last U20 squad which is great. They've put alot of work into youth rugby and its starting to pay off for them. Its something the other provinces can also look at especially Munster who have big number of youth players. Theres more Sean O'Briens out there.

meetings between ian sherwin and youths and schools delegates have been held over the last few seasons but there has been plenty of issues that remain unsolved
several ways of improving the standard of rugby and the promotion of youths rugby have went through in recent years
for example the man of the match in the schools finals for the last few years has won the avonmore superhero award and got a voucher from the munster rugby store and this year the MOTM in the 17s/19s final will get the same voucher.all the finalists will recieve avonmore kitbags
munster had 5 or 6 youths in their 20s squad this season
finals this year being played in thomond unlike previois years where theyve been played in clonmel, cit

German Challenge For Ireland U-18 Clubs Squad

    23 March 2011, 9:09 am
    By Editor

The Ireland Under-18 Clubs squad will this season play three international matches, with the Ireland Under-18 Schools side set to compete in the newly-revamped FIRA-AER Under-18 European Championship.

The Ireland Under-18 Clubs team will play Germany in their first international match in Berlin this Saturday. The match will take place at SC Berliner, with a kick-off time of 2pm (local time). The selected Ireland squad contains three players who played in last year's FIRA-AER Under-18 European Championship final against France - Ireland's third tournament final in five years.
They are lock and captain Eoghan Masterson (Portlaoise), centre Thomas Daly (Carlow) and flanker Akhlaque Khan (Navan).
Head coach Greg Lynch is in no doubt that this first outing against Germany will prove a tough opener for his young side.
Germany are one of the most improved squads at Under-18 level, having been promoted from the second division of the FIRA-AER Championship two years ago.
They cemented their place in the top division with a strong performance in last year's tournament in Treviso.
This will be the second occasion that these two nations have met at this level. Last season Ireland defeated Germany 20-11 in a tough first round match.
The benefits of the IRFU dual pathway at Clubs and Schools level can be seen when one looks at the players who have represented the Ireland Under-20s in this year's Six Nations.
Mike Ruddock's U-20 squad contained nine players who first emerged on the international scene when they played for the Ireland U-18 Clubs team. Two of these players played for last year's U-18 Clubs side - prop Tadhg Furlong and full-back Michael Sherlock.

I think a prestigious youths cup to parallel the towns cup - maybe even played on the same day, at the same venue would be a very good idea.

One huge difference used to be in Munster everyone used to play for their school and their club at the sametime. This wasn't allowed in Leinster and the school took precedence. Now, you are allowed play for your club if your school says so.

But I think this should be stretched even further, in that a school are only allowed nominate 10 players or so who can't play for their club.

Again, strange to see such a small Munster contingent? I thought at clubs level there would be much more.

Anyway, any team with someone called Sean O'Brien in it can't possibly lose! Best of luck Ireland! Can't be losing to them Germans.

munster have been going through a transition period, from what ive seen of the u17 development games that decide septembers munster youths there is some 7 or 8 definate irish youths there
the germans are fairly good, they only lost 20-11 to ireland in last years FIRA championship and they are getting more backing every year
The Publications Manager of the IRB commented after 1 of the germans games last year that it was the first time in the almost 40 years he had been watching German national teams, that a German team had played world class rugby

Any props or centers coming through OL?

I think I read before that theres a similar number of youth players in Munster and Leinster. Leinster had 4 youths in the last U20 team so if Munster can sort out that area it'll be good for Irish rugby.

Ireland U-18 Clubs Side Win In Germany

    28 March 2011, 10:04 am
    By Editor

The Ireland Under-18 Clubs team ran in eight tries in a convincing performance in Berlin on Saturday, emerging as 54-0 winners over the Germany Under-18s.

In the first of their three International matches - they play England at Ashbourne on Sunday, April 10 and France in Quimper on Saturday, April 17 - the young Ireland Clubs side outplayed their German hosts. Centre Thomas Daly scored 14 points in all, kicking two early penalties and converting four of Ireland's eight tries.
Right from the kick-off, in sunny but cold conditions, the Irish team made their intentions clear as they gained early possession and pressurised the German defensive line.
Twice, English referee Claire Daniels penalised the under pressure home side at the breakdown, enabling Daly to open the Irish account with two successful penalties.
Despite an early injury to scrum half Finbarr McGowan, who was replaced by Eoin Stynes, the Irish side continued to dominate both territory and possession.
The strong Irish scrum, with front rowers Ryan Furniss, George McGuigan and Peter Dooley in outstanding form, ensured good quality ball for their strong running back-line.
Ireland were also in control in the lineout where Ultan Dillane and Eoghan Masterson dominated. It was from good lineout ball that the visitors scored their first try.
The ball was moved wide to winger Tom Flynn who scored the opening try of the match in the right hand corner.
From the restart Ireland secured good possession and Liam Bourke chipped ahead and then regathered the ball. He off loaded to loosehead prop Dooley whose driving run took play close to the German line.
Blindside flanker Conor Joyce, who had a strong ball-carrying game, picked up from the base of the ruck to drive over for Ireland's second try.
The Ireland back-three of Conor Fitzgibbon, David Panter and Flynn counter-attacked with pace and purpose at every opportunity.
From one such attack, Masterson scored the final try of the half which was converted by Daly to leave Ireland with a comfortable but fully-deserved 23-0 half-time lead.
There was no respite for the hosts as from the opening scrum of the second half, number 8 Masterson broke blind and fed replacement scrum half Stynes who dummied his way over to score a fine individual try. Daly added the extras.
Ireland replaced both props with Jamie Dever and Josh O'Rourke being introduced and full-back Panter, who came off with a slight injury, was replaced by Adam Byrne.
Following another successful lineout, Ireland showed good continuity involving both backs and forwards as they continued to exploit gaps in the German defence.
From a ruck, the ball was moved blind to the ever dangerous Fitzgibbon and he dotted down in the corner.
With 20 minutes to go, Ireland introduced Kieran Butler, Cillian Walsh, Cronan Gleeson and Dave O'Connell in place of Bourke, McGuigan, Akhlaque Khan and Sean O'Brien.
A powerful surge by replacement prop Dever saw him score close to the posts and Daly added the conversion.
Replacement centre Butler then cut a good line to run in unopposed from the 22. Once again Daly added the conversion.
The final try was scored by centre Conall Doherty, following a strong run and good offload by Masterson. That stretched the margin to 54-0 in the visitors' favour, much to the delight of a small but happy crowd of Ireland supporters.
It was a satisfying first outing for this young Ireland squad but they are well aware that much sterner tests lie ahead as they prepare to face both England and France in the coming weeks.

Good luck to Waterpark in both age grades. It would be a great achievement for all involved at the club if they done the double or even won one. Its especially good for rugby an area that hasn't a great tradition.

Have Cork Con any youth teams or do they just poach other teams best players?

con have not had a team compete in the main south u18/19 league in years, nor dolphin. the best youths clubs in cork by far are sundays well and highfield

waterpark have now won the double in munster at 16/17 and 18/19 levels 3 times in the last 5 years but last years 17s were the first waterpark team to win an all ireland youths title

Thats a joke so isn't it. A club the size of Cork Con not even having youth teams. Its a lazy way of getting success.

Most of their players would be cup tied. Shannon only had a u19's team this year by going in with Mary's and Abbeyfeale, iirc.

The do have much younger underage teams, Luke Fitz played with them til u12's, iirc.

but surely in a city the size of cork and with the popularity of rugby at the moment a prominant club like cork con could find 18/19 lads to play for them in an under 19 competition even if it was in a development league against the likes of old christians and clonakilty
you are correct about shannon-stmarys combining and look what happened, with some forward thinking 40 lads who wouldnt have played rugby this year, got to reach a munster final at 17s level and munster semi final at 19s level

I'm sure they could but this is probably how they've always operated. Let the schools get on with winning the schools comps and take the players afterwards. Tbf, it's worked out well for both Con and the schools. In a broader sense they maybe aren't serving "Cork rugby" that well but don't think Con have ever made bones about being somewhat elitist.
