He didn’t say ‘none of them’ speak Irish, he was asking if the two leading ladies speak Irish.... ;)

I asked if either Mary Lou McDonald or Michelle O'Neill could speak Irish, I did not say that nobody in SF could speak it. I even explicitly said that Declan Kearney, the party chairman, was listed as answering the question, in Irish.

Mary Lou seemed to be getting a positive reception to her appearances on UK TV over the last few days. Lots of talk of how well she came across and how competent she appeared in front of camera.

DUP were getting hammered.

The European council have recommended that the uk govt move to introduce legislation to protect the Irish language and the rights of Irish speakers..

Of course the UK government can ignore them, but if direct rule resumes, it will be interesting to hear why the Tory party would refuse the north a language act that mirrors those already in place in other regions.

he was asking if MLMCD or MON could speak Irish - thats the 'them' I was referring to.

Dont quote ruth dudley edwards at me. She's terriblly anti SF and completely pro unionist.

Fair enough, so what you meant to say was 'neither of them' speak Irish but some of the delegation clearly Do...

clearly Don?

You mean clearly don't? How is that clear Billy? whats clear is the delegated irish speaker was Declan Kearney, the party chairman. It's NOT clear if either of the other two speak Irish or not, but Im pretty sure MON does considering her upbringing. in many republican areas Irish is spoken quite a bit as the brits and RUC couldnt understand it

Relax Billy - it's not like either of them were being asked to be minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht

This is what happened after the ministerial reshuffle by Irish leader Enda Kenny when it was revealed his chosen Minister fort he Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Joe McHugh from Donegal, only had a very basic knowledge of the language
.

It's pretty clear they can't. Why else would they have needed Declan Kearney to answer the question?

Does Leo need someone else to field questions asked through Irish? Does Micheal Martin?

I meant clearly do, as in the party chairman and presumably a great number of others do as well, the question was can Mary Lou and Michelle speak Irish?
Not that it really matters one way or the other, as languages go it's not really much use other than, as you point out, giving someone the ability to converse in a language which is not understood by the security forces, which some people might find useful.

did you want the three of them to speak atthe same time, or say a few words each? You logic is mad - they all didnt speak in irish therefore they cant.
