First time poster, long time reader,

I wanted to talk to people who are left hand golfers about the struggles when it comes to club fitting and see if we can share some info to make it a bit easier for the left handers out there. At the moment I am in the market for a Driver and 3 wood. Currently have an R9 and never really had a 3 wood in the bag. My experience so far is that I went to a Ping demo day and it went all wrong. I didn't hit it well so the fitting was a disaster. We ended up fixing a miss that is not typical for me. All my fault of course. I'm keen to try other clubs but going to numerous fitting days to try out different brands is not really feasible.

I have been ringing around some of the specialists around the Greater Dublin area to see whats out there in LH or what is coming:

Gavin Lunny (Naas) - LH in Callaway Rogue & Epic, Ping G400 range, Updated Titleist range due in Feb.
Foregolf - By end of March - TM M3 & M4, Epic and Rogue, Mizuno's, and Cobra F8.
Johnny Byrne (Royal Tara) - LH in Taylormade range and Ping range.

After that its pretty brand specific. I'm assuming Titleist in Carton House have all the LH heads to try. Also the GUI Academy team are going to start fitting for Taylormade. I got a whack of the M3 and M4 there 2 weeks ago.

Is there anyone else I should consider? Which of the the big box stores (McGuirks etc.) has the best options for Left Hand if I go down that route?

What do all the left handers (or clued in right handers!) out there think? Whats been your experience?

Niall Martin in Pro Golf in Athlone does custom fitting, trackman the lot and he's left handed himself. Only 70 min from Dublin.

I'm a lefty myself and over the years have had fittings at Carton House, Foregolf, McGuirks in Leopardstown Driving Range, and various "Demo Days" eg when Ping or Taylormade are in town, usually Stepaside or Leopardstown driving ranges.

To be honest they're all fine and they always had left handed heads available to try. Granted, they may not have something exotic or unusual that would really only be for outliers on the fitting spectrum, and often a manufacturer won't actually produce a model in left hand, but I don't think I've ever not been able to try something. Possibly once or twice, but off the top of my head nothing comes to mind.

It really depends on what you want. Obviously at a demo day or custom fit day put on by one of the tour trucks, you'll only get clubs from that manufacturer, whereas at somewhere like a Foregolf or independent pro you'll get a bigger range of makes and models to try, depending on his stock.

If I'm honest the best result (as opposed to the whole "experience") from a driver fitting I ever had was a 15 min session with the guys from Taylor Made at one of their custom fitting days in Leopardstown driving range - the guy was good enough to tell me that my numbers with my old driver (Ping G30) were pretty optimal and there wasn't much point in changing. I was the last customer and they were tidying up to go home and on a whim he gave me a M2 to try with a particular shaft and the numbers stayed the pretty much same apart from picking up around 10 yards carry. He was as surprised as me, and whether it was by luck or design, I've no idea !

The fitting bay in McGuirks Leopardstown is pretty good and you're hitting full shots into the range as opposed to into a net, the guy who does the fittings is excellent IMO. It might be a good compromise between travelling all the way out to Foregolf (for not a whole lot more than you'd get anyway) and limiting yourself to, say, a Ping Demo day in a range.

Thanks Russman for the info, good to hear you found the right club! Sometimes its all a bit of luck really. When I got a quick try of the M4 at Carton House I hit it really well so I'll probably end up with one of those anyway. I actually live near Foregolf so I'm leaning that way but everything is within an hour drive. Its all about balancing the cost vs. the range of choice. The brand days in Mcguirks are now €30 for 30 mins. Although one benefit of being a lefty is that you'll probably get longer with the clubs as there is unlikely to be a lefty after you. The Ping guy let me fire away for another 30 balls or so after my time was up (pity about the toe shanks).

My fitting experience so far was just the Ping day at Leopardstown. It didn't go well and I probably didn't fully understand the numbers being shared back from Trackman. After that I decided to go back to square one. I went out to Carton and got an hour on Trackman on my own. Well worth the €50. Learned a lot about the numbers and began to get the best out of my current Driver. I'd recommend this to anyone!

    Thanks again!
