No egr in that, or is there? That's an M5 isn't it?

Not sure, doesn't look like a genuine M5, door mirrors and wheels seem off. Open to correction. Some of the comments are interesting, in Korea BMWs not allowed in multistory carparks due to fire risk.

Anyone hear any more re parts?

Has anyone totally lost it with BMW yet re their exceptionally poor level of customer service in relation to this issue and their complete lack of communication and / or updates?

I received a call from my BMW dealer in Cork today and was told that my 420d is ready to collect. They have had it for over 5 weeks. I have to say, I have been extremely satisfied with how the dealer dealt with me as this issue has nothing to do with them. This is a manufacturing problem and I think it's a bit ridiculous that anyone would blame their dealer. I received a replacement car. I'll admit I have hated every minute I spent in the 182 Mazda 3 I was given, but I think it's fantastic that the dealer provided it. I experienced no problems whatsoever in dealing with them. They had a good look at my car too and offered to replace the worn tyres while it was in with them.

It takes a lot of patience. I know a lot of people reading this know how it feels to be head over heels in love with your car, and how being parted from it is a frustrating, and even infuriating experience.

BMW manufacturing really dropped the ball here but the logistics and requirements of having to recover from a part issue like this should not be taken lightly. Your dealer does not know when the parts will arrive in stock and what models of cars they will be able to repair first. They will obviously call you as soon as the work is complete because they want to get your car back to you just as much as you do.

I know it's easy to say after being told my car is ready, but it's been a long 5 weeks and all I can recommend is to be patient. If you're lucky enough to have a relatively pain free experience, like I did, the dealer deserves a lot of appreciation.

I bought my car from an indy dealer, albeit BMW specialist who brought it in from the UK, so not a BMW main Dealer here. I can empathise with dealers as they have no control over this and are doing what they can. My issue is with BMW Ireland who have my car nearly five weeks now and have not once called me to update me on the status of my car. I have called several times and been told they don't know what's going on and when parts will arrive. I have asked to speak to the Customer Services Manager and staff have been instructed not to put calls through or give out their contact info. They're basically sticking their heads in the sand. If only they'd communicate, pick up the phone to update or even email I wouldn't be half as annoyed.

Do RTE have the equivalent of BBC Watchdog? This might be the only way to light a fire under them (no pun intended). I'd also be blitzing their social media pages.

Ah seriously lads what can they actually do? There's a shortage of parts due to the scale of the recall, they really can't tell you when your car will be fixed because they just don't know. They have to impound it as it's a huge safety concern. Calling or expecting to be called when there's over 10,000 cars on the recall here alone is a bit ott. It's an almighty pain but what's the alternative?

I'd expect a little communication, not one solitary phone call in five weeks.

While parts supply is what it is the customer communication seems appalling. How hard can it be? Cars are checked in at dealers and await the part, first in, first out. BMW should at least be able to say where you are in the queue.

Had my car's EGR checked a couple of months back. Noticed an exhaust gas smell so had it checked there again.

Not part of the recall (not leaking coolant) but there's gas getting out somewhere. Parts in stock in Germany and they'll have it by Wednesday I was told.

Bought a 161 520D luxury edition import about 2 weeks back without knowing about this recall beforehand.
I was waiting to receive my vehicle registration cert from Shannon before I logged a test through the link.
Received the cert earlier this week and A DAY later I got the recall notice!

I booked the test through the site but I didn't get a date, only that the main dealer will get back to me.

That simple isn't it. They don't know when you will be in queue because they don't know when they have parts. What part of that is hard to grasp?

Read my post again. You can have a queue without the parts. BMW may not know when part is coming, but they could tell you your car is number X in line. Can you grasp that?

So far my car is gone 7+ weeks. Thankfully it was at least moved from the holding area to the garage last week or so. They are hoping to have it fixed by the end of this week/ start of next week. Will see soon enough, they were awaiting parts. I'm not half as frustrated since they've given me a decent car but still looking forward to getting my own back.

Forgot to update... finally got the car back on March 14th, exactly 6 weeks after it went in.

My car is in 2 weeks yesterday, received a text last week and a phone call yesterday from Bolands apologizing but they have no idea at this moment in time as to when they will have the valve for my car. Fair play for keeping me informed, I have a rental while its off the road and there is not much more the dealership can do in this instance.

Like I said previously, at least the valve will be done when I get my car back.

Talking to a fellow BMW owner yesterday re this and he said that he would be looking for an extent of his BMW warranty equivalent to the time the car was off the road due to the recall.....just wondering what peoples thoughts on that would be?

That's something you wouldn't really think of and is well worth enquiring about. I doubt you will get much sympathy from them but it's definitely worth a shot.

Finally got the recall letter this week. my 420d GC is already booked in for April 5th since early Feb, which was the date the garage picked to ensure the parts would be in good supply - it seems that the parts still aren’t freely available though?

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

5 and a half weeks in now. Not one update received from BMW. Called numerous times to be told the usual 'no parts, don't know when they'll be in'. Asked to speak to either the Customer Services Mgr or Aftersales Director who are named on the recall later. Couldn't be put through, contact info for same refused. Sent an email of complaint to a BMW Customer Service last Friday and copied in all sorts of management. Still no response bar a couple of automated 'we'll get back to you's. Called again this morning and once again and got more of the same. My insurance co provided free temp cover on the rental car up to 30 days. Am now incurring an additional €38 per week cost to cover the rental.

I've been driving BMW's almost exclusively for 23 years now. Strongly thinking of going elsewhere next time due to the handling of this issue.

I’ll call them beforehand to check if they have the parts- hardly worth taking the chance that they take it in and then tell me they need to keep it.
In my case I’ve had an exhaust sensor (presumably EGR related) replaced twice under warranty since new in 152, so fingers crossed this work is already done

Got a call back after throwing the toys out of the pram. Covering my extra insurance costs, upgrading the rental to F Class and confirmed my car will be in the next batch to hit Frank Keane.

Is it possible that the car could go on fire in a carpark while parked.

Is it all BMWS or just the series three and five.

I am going to make sure I dont park beside these series of cars if I can help it.

If I had bought one I would be getting rid of it after it was fixed. If owner highlight this problem too much then the resale vakue of their high end car will be affected.

How much are these cars, say for a basic 520 model, what is a ball park figure.

My 520 in this morning with Joe Duffy, have a loaner sorted but wondering if they try and stiff me with cost? which i wont accept...... "hoping" its in for the day as advised but will not be surprised in the slightest if its kept judging by feedback on here.

No they won't spontaneously combust. There is a series of conditions required for a fire to occur, mentioned earlier in this thread.

It's several different models depending on the engine.

    From BMW Ireland:

"Background information relating to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) module

As part of ongoing quality analysis at BMW, it was determined that the cooler of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module fitted to some vehicles, may develop a leak over its service life. In such instances when combined with the high temperatures of the exhaust gases can, in rare cases cause melting of the intake manifold and in extreme cases, a fire.

Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is important to note the early symptoms detailed below:

The low engine coolant warning is displayed to the driver
The check engine and/or drivetrain warning message is displayed to the driver
A loss of power from the engine whilst driving
Smell of exhaust gas and a whistling noisefrom the engine compartment
Smoke development from the engine compartment

    Which vehicles are affected;

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) module recall affects certain selected vehicles with 4 and 6 cylinder diesel engines."

No point in getting rid of it after its fixed.
I don't see how this would affect resale value. Manufacturers issue recalls for their cars all the time.

I have been driving cars for twenty five years and have never had one recalled.

This is a serious defect and it doesnt inspire confidence.

I wouldnt take one of those cars if you gave it to me and If I had bought one I would be passing the problem onto to someone else ASAP.

Such a shoddy consumer service, made even worse by the luxury cache and price attached to BMW cars.
